We removed the staining on the interior limestone and the brick face on the fireplace using a poultice was applied to pull the salts out of the masonry. The front concrete walkway was also cleaned to remove all soiling and stains. A test area was performed to determine the most appropriate cleaning procedure, and the results of the testing established a benchmark for the most effective and least damaging procedure to be used to remove the organic growth, and atmospheric soiling and stains.
All of the cleaning was conducted in accordance with Preservation Brief #1: Assessing Cleaning and Water-Repellant Treatments for Historic Masonry Buildings, published by the National Park Service. |
